Sun, Sea & Sex

“Sun, Sea & Sex,” 2023
Acrylic on black velvet
36 x 48 inches
“Sun, Sea & Sex” is a series of self-portraits created on black velvet, exploring the portrayal of Filipina bodies in the context of sex tourism in the Philippines. This work examines the historical impact of colonization and military presence, revealing the harmful ideologies and stereotypes that contribute to the fetishization of Filipina women. The phrase "Sun, Sea & Sex" emerged in the 20th century as a marketing tool to attract foreign visitors post-military occupancy. Yet, it perpetuates a troubling narrative that reduces Filipina women to mere commodities, often viewed solely as prostitutes.
